Coaches with a player's perspective

Our coaches are players or former players themselves, bringing invaluable on-court experience to every session. Some even major in education, which is fantastic because teaching is coaching! This unique blend of practical experience ensures a comprehensive and engaging learning environment for all our athletes.

The main idea behind our coaches' approach is to add to the enthusiasm of our program as they help teach the game! They aim to instill a love for volleyball while developing essential skills, fostering teamwork, and building confidence in every player, regardless of their starting skill level.

A family atmosphere on and off the court

Players and their families should expect a family atmosphere with our coaches. We believe in creating a supportive and welcoming environment where everyone feels valued. Our coaches provide not just instruction, but also mentorship, guidance, and a strong sense of community.

Irick Gardner — Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at York University (NE)

Irick Gardner is the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at York University in York, Nebraska, where he has been leading the program since 2022, He is also a former head coach at Judson University in Elgin, Illinois, from 2022–2023

Coaching Background

Gardner has over 30 years of coaching experience in volleyball, with a strong track record at both the collegiate and high school levels FieldLevel. His career includes:

  • Club Director & Coach at Instant Replay Volleyball Club (1996–2019) 
  • Head Girls Volleyball Coach at Marian High School (2004–2011), where his teams reached the final four five times, including two state championships 
  • Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at Concordia-Ann Arbor (2003–2004) 
  • Assistant coaching roles at Kentucky State and Wayne State (MI) universities 

  • Coaching experience in Windsor, Ontario, Canada 

Achievements

  • 2021 CCAC Men’s Volleyball Coach of the Year at Judson University, where he led the men’s team to its first 20+ win season, 10+ win conference season, first CCAC tournament appearance, and first CCAC championship match.
  • Six-time CSHL Conference Coach of the Year and multiple Michigan state-level awards during his Marian High School tenure 

Current Role at York University

At York University, Gardner continues to focus on recruiting and developing talent for the women’s volleyball program, building on his decades of experience across multiple levels of the game . He is based at the Freeman Center and can be reached at ikgardner@york.edu York College+1.
